This exhibit features artists Carol Hamilton and Jeffrey Sevener whose work explores the passage of light and color through layers of paint, paper, glass, and wax.
Carol’s paintings can be described as full of complex layering and motion yet they exude an aura of calm and timelessness. Her themes are informed by a concern with balance and contemplation. The luminosity of encaustic paint coupled with the challenge of the process intrigues her: the manipulation of the paint with fire; responding to the surface intuitively; then finding the delicate balance between intuition and editing to bring the composition to fulfillment. The inspiration for Carol’s work is how the mind recalls location and time, which is inherently indistinct and altered.
Jeffrey’s selected work in STRATA expresses the theme of layers in two distinct series. The first explores three-dimensional layers in painted paper and glass to represent a new perception of depth within nature. The second series is painted on translucent vellum and shows figures interacting within two-dimensional layers
