La Hija de Sabu by Liese Ricketts

MOVING SPECTACLES
BY LIESE RICKETTS
Espectáculos que (con)mueven

Motion and emotion: these are Liese Ricketts’s primary concerns in Moving Spectacles, or Espectáculos que (con) mueven. In her photographs of itinerant Peruvian performers, Ricketts provides an intimate look at scenes from the daily lives of family circus entertainers, freelance street comics, and schizophrenic Peruvian Independence parade participants. Motivated neither by a callous fascination with or exploitation of the grotesque and the bizarre, nor by a dispassionate interest in the mere documentation of performance in Peruvian culture, Moving Spectacles is a body of work that evokes a deep appreciation for the struggle, fortitude, and pride that these Peruvian performers exhibit daily.
