This exhibit features prints from a series of photographs taken between 1976 and 1980 of small family-owned-and-operated business in America. These were taken at a time when shopping malls were just beginning to pop up across the country and many small, independently owned businesses were forced to close their doors.
Over a four-year period, Gremp photographed over 250 different businesses in over 35 states. They represent the broad range of goods and services provided by these vital entrepreneurs, including groceries, baked goods, furniture, funerals, hardwares, hair salons, shipbuilders and worms. Over two dozen of these images were collected into a book, Family Run, which was published earlier this year.
The black-and-white photographs were taken with a 5 x 7″ camera. The negatives were recently scanned in order to produce these 11 x 14″ prints. This exhibit will also feature one large-format print from this collection.
