Tulika Ladsariya’s work is inspired by the contrasts and extremes of urban cities- how they are constructed, who constructs them, how inhabitants react to them and how they affect the natural environment. The influence of the urban landscapes of Mumbai, London and Chicago- the three major cities where the artist has spent significant years of her life- form the basis of her images and work. She examines two severe influences – city construction and environmental impact – which at once represent the pinnacle and the nadir of human activity
Tulika’s move to Chicago in 2009 has steered her landscapes in a fresh direction. The artist shifts her focus to the architecturally magnificent high-raises in Chicago. There is an attempt to strike a balance between the furiously rising structures and the natural environment around it. The resulting paintings urge the viewer to re-examine the possibilities and the impact of the urban landscape. The acrylics reduce the Chicagoan skyline to almost flat colors and precise lines that are architectural in nature. The interaction with nature is however almost accidental through the pouring and mixing of glossy enamel paint. This lends an insight into the artist’s dual nature- the obsession with detail and playfulness blending together.
