Terry Tayler

While I am still trying to find myself as an artist, I try to translate a strong sense of energy into each piece I do. Wild brushstrokes, vibrant colors and distortion of shapes or the human figure are more than common elements found in my work. I want to show the viewer visually interesting shapes, colors and textures and translate a feeling to them. The work is very emotionally driven and because my painting process is so impulsive, a lot of myself is truly added into the final product. There is a bit of aggression and frustration found in the work as well as themes of transition, fear of the future and a feeling of fleeting time. Much of my process is a reaction to each choice I make on the canvas. A kind of “for every action there is a reaction” type of method. Adding and subtracting marks, covering up certain things, and physically removing paint also plays a role in my work. With influences from art history and pop culture, such as anime and comics, I feel I have a lot of room to work with the variety of new themes and thoughts that come to me. I’ll continue to draw, paint, and explore different mediums so that I can express myself to others and find out who I am and exactly what I want to say as an artist.
