Amy O. Woodbury

Before making paintings, Amy made dances. For 22 years she performed and choreographed professionally, her primary vehicle being Osgood Dances, Inc., a fixture in the Chicago dance scene. As with dance-making, her process utilizes improvisation in the initial approach of each piece; she starts by throwing down an off- the- top-of- her- head terrain of mass, color and texture. From this loose construct, Amy will either excavate a figure/object or expand on the abstraction before her. In either case, she may paint an entire composition and then choose to begin anew, keeping the parts she likes; it is not unusual for a canvas to have several completed pictures beneath the final result. Some influences, reminders, nudges and the like: landscapes, seasons, kids’ art, textures, weathered surfaces, negative space. Amy has studied painting with George Rocheleau, M. Ivan Cherry, and Florence Singer. Exhibits include Raw Art Gallery, Judy A. Saslow Gallery, Stockyard Magazine.com, ArtistsinAuction.com, Goodman Theatre (scenic elements) and ArtWorldChicago.com. Over 200 of her works are in private and corporate collections, including the Evanston Public Library.
